MEET THE MURPHYS

Jack & Pat 50 Golden Years

Meet Jack and Pat Murphy, pictured here celebrating 50 Golden Years in business, surrounded by family and friends. In 1972, Jack and Pat introduced Jack Murphy Jewellers to Newry City and haven’t looked back since. They set about raising industry standards and have built a strong reputation over the years becoming renowned for their expertise, knowledge and dedication to their craft.

DEDICATED TO HIS CRAFT

A father-of-four and grandfather-of-seven, with over 60 years’ experience in the jewellery trade, Jack Murphy started his trade at the young age of 14 as an apprentice watchmaker. With time on his side, he later moved into jewellery and while still in his teens, built up a strong, independent workshop. In 1963 he moved to Downpatrick with his late brother Willie and the business continued to grow, from workshop to retail. A year later Jack joined the Ulster Jewellers Association and retail jewellers Ireland. This led to an invitation to join the council of the National Association of Goldsmiths. Jack and his wife Pat then settled and opened Jack Murphy Jewellers in Newry in 1972.

As the family business grew from strength to strength, so too did the number of accolades and achievements Jack received. Among the titles he held were President of the Ulster Jewellers Association, President of the Retail Jewellers Ireland, President of Newry Chamber and President of Newry Rotary Club. Jack was also a member of De Beers Diamond Club, Carat Club and a founder of Independent Jewellers Limited and founder of Irish Jeweller Review Magazine. He was chairperson of Newry City Centre Management, lead the Newry City Campaign, Newry Bids ‘Yes’ Campaign and is still an active member of Newry Chamber.

Away from work, Jack’s keen interest in sport saw him take on the role of captain of Ardglass Golf Club while he was also a board member of his beloved Dundalk Football Club for 25 years. He is still a devoted supporter, watching his team play whenever and wherever he can.

However, family is never far from his mind, having celebrated 50 years of marriage to wife Pat, with whom he has four children, Tina, Barry, Rory and Gemma. Although semi-retired and dividing his time between his Co. Down home and the sunshine of Spain, he remains a guiding light in the business, instilling his values of hard work, passion and drive into an ever-growing team. The mantra he swears by 'you can buy advertisements, but you earn reputation' has been passed onto his family and team as his name continues to represent outstanding success in his field.

“I’m proud to witness the next generation take on the reigns of the business and see their enthusiasm and vision come to life, taking the business my wife, Pat and I started, over 50 years ago, to new levels. It’s an exciting time for Jack Murphy Jewellers and I look forward to seeing what the future holds!”
