Our ethical gold source

Our Sourcing of Gold

The team here at Jack Murphy Jewellers we have always taken the ethical issues associated with sourcing gold very seriously. This has recently been highlighted again after the airing of the Channel 4 Dispatches programme, ‘The Real Price of Gold’.

When the issue of so called ‘dirty gold’ was raised a number of years ago, we immediately contacted our suppliers to seek assurances that the metal we use in our manufacturing was ethically sourced.

We received confirmation from all of our suppliers that they do not condone the use of ‘dirty gold’ and have assured us that they conform with the guiding principles behind this campaign, outlined below.

The ‘Golden Rules’ call on all mining companies to meet the following basic standards in their operations:

  Respect for basic human rights.
Free, prior and informed consent of affected communities.
  Safe working conditions.
Respect for workers rights and labour standards.
Ensure that are not located in areas of armed or militarized conflict.
Ensure that projects do not force communities off their land.
No dumping of mine waste into lakes, rivers or streams.
Ensure that projects are not located in protected areas.
Ensure that projects do not generate sulphuric acid in perpetuity.
Cover all costs of closing down and cleaning up of mine sites.
Fully disclose information about social environmental effects on projects.
Allow independent verification of the above.
