The 4Cs – Colour – Clarity – Cut – Carat Weight
Carat Weight: Bigger is Bigger – Not always Better
As with all precious stones, the weight of a diamond is expressed in Carats. The word Carat originates from a naturally occurring unit of weight – the seed of the carob tree.
Diamonds were traditionally weighed against these seed until the system was standardised – one Carat was fixed at 0.2 gram (one fifth of a gram) One Carat is divided into 100 “points” so a diamond that weights 25 points can be described as a quarter of a carat i.e. 0.25ct or 25 points.
The size is the most obvious factor in determining the value of a diamond – but always remember: Two diamonds of equal size / weight can have very, very different values – depending on the clarity, colour and quality of the cut. (Show a range of sizes from 25p to 1.5ct)
